Deep Calm Formula takes a broad approach to the problem of winding down. Its 831mg proprietary blend brings together GABA, ashwagandha, chamomile, lemon balm, magnolia, passionflower, valerian, L-theanine and hops, alongside ingredients aimed more broadly at stress, mood and cognitive resilience, including rhodiola, bacopa and St John's wort.
GABA provides some of the most direct sleep evidence in the formula. In a placebo-controlled human study using EEG, oral GABA significantly shortened the time taken to fall asleep and increased total non-REM sleep - a meaningfully stronger form of evidence than most botanical sleep research offers, since it's confirmed by brainwave measurement rather than self-report.
Passionflower provides another useful strand of human evidence. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of adults with diagnosed insomnia, two weeks of passionflower increased total sleep time by roughly 23 minutes compared to placebo, measured using overnight polysomnography - a genuinely rigorous, objective result for a botanical ingredient.
Valerian has a longer history as a sleep herb, but a less consistent scientific record. A meta-analysis found a signal for improved subjective sleep - people were more likely to report sleeping better - while objective and quantitative sleep measures were much less convincing. It remains a relevant part of the formula, but the evidence is more mixed than its reputation sometimes suggests.
Ashwagandha approaches sleep from another direction. Across five randomised controlled trials involving 400 participants, a 2021 meta-analysis found ashwagandha produced a small but significant improvement in overall sleep, with stronger effects reported in people already experiencing insomnia and in studies using longer treatment periods and higher doses. Chamomile, lemon balm, magnolia, hops and L-theanine add further ingredients traditionally or experimentally associated with relaxation and winding down.
The most useful way to think about Deep Calm is therefore as a stress-to-sleep formula rather than a heavy sedative. Its strongest direct sleep evidence comes from GABA and passionflower, while valerian, ashwagandha and the wider calming botanical mix broaden the rationale for people who find that tension, mental activity or difficulty switching off follows them into the night.
